Exploring San Mateo's CuriOdyssey Museum with Oris and Topper Jewelers

Posted on

Back in October, when we launched our ninth Topper Limited Edition – a very special Oris Diver 65 (learn more about the inspiration for this unique collab right here), we pledged to donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale of each piece to the local CuriOdyssey museum & zoo. The museum in turn would use those funds to launch a wildly imaginative new outdoor installation, called 'IlluminOdyssey Outdoors.' As we would soon learn on our first walkthrough, CuriOdyssey designers created a glowing master-class in phosphorescence and luminosity, with a series of highly educational, and fun exhibits all designed to teach children about light and its many properties – there's even a special exhibit showcasing how a watch dial's luminous paint works, which, as many watch collectors love to opine, "pictures do not do it justice."

Located on the edge of the San Francisco Bay and just a short drive away from our downtown Burlingame store, CuriOdyssey is a fixture in Silicon Valley's family culture – in fact, our very own Rob Caplan spent many childhood days at the museum – a family tradition he is now continuing with his own daughter Emma. Designed as an interactive science and wildlife center, CuriOdyssey's ongoing aim is to help children acquire the tools they need to understand and appreciate our changing world – a noble mission that simultaneously aligns with Oris’ commitment to conservation, and Topper’s ongoing tradition of supporting the future generations of its local community.

Of course none of this would have been possible without support from Oris and from Topper's avid watch collecting community. But we also have to extend a very warm note of thanks to our friends at Fremont Bank, who generously matched our donation amount from every watch, effectively doubling our contribution to the museum, and enabling CuriOdyssey to safely open the exhibit during challenging economic times, giving Bay Area families a much-needed respite from the pandemic with a safe and wonderful outdoor activity.

This new Oris x Topper Jewelers marks the second time we've collaborated on a limited edition – the first being in 2016, with the now long sold-out 40mm Diver 65 Topper Edition, which ranks amongst the earliest Diver 65 collaborations Oris produced with any brand partner. As many of our fans already know, this new edition revisits some of the winning design elements of that beloved watch, with the unique twist that doesn’t simulate an aged archival reference, but re-imagines what the watch would have looked like to a buyer, over fifty years ago.

* Due to the Covid pandemic, the IlluminOdyssey exhibit is currently
closed to the public, though it is expected to re-open in January.
In the meantime, please wear a mask and stay safe!
